Ab Wheel Rollout
About Ab Wheel Rollout
The ab wheel rollout is a formidable compound exercise that puts the abs under anti-extension tension throughout the roll-out: they must stop the lower back from arching as you extend forward. The shoulders and lats stabilise as secondary movers. It is one of the most effective dynamic core exercises, but also demanding, reserved for lifters able to lock in a solid brace. Start on your knees with a small range, brace the trunk hard and tuck the pelvis; only lengthen the roll-out once you control it perfectly, never letting the lower back cave in.

helpFrequently asked questions
Is the ab wheel suitable for beginners?expand_more
Not really: you should hold a strict plank first. Start with partial kneeling rollouts.
How many reps should I do?expand_more
Aim for 3 sets of 6 to 12 controlled reps, prioritizing quality over range.
Why do I feel it in my lower back?expand_more
Because the lower back arches instead of staying braced: the lumbar spine, not the abs, then takes the load. Reduce the range, tuck the pelvis and keep the navel drawn in to shift everything onto the abs.
