Instructions

  1. 1Adjust the seat so that your legs are only slightly bent in the start position. The balls of your feet should be firmly on the platform.
  2. 2Select an appropriate weight, and grasp the handles. This will be your starting position.
  3. 3Straighten the legs by extending the knees, just barely lifting the weight from the stack. Your ankle should be fully flexed, toes pointing up. Execute the movement by pressing downward through the balls of your feet as far as possible.
  4. 4After a brief pause, reverse the motion and repeat.

About Calf Press

The calf press is a calf raise variation performed on a leg press machine, where only the ankles carry out the movement while the legs stay mostly extended. Seated with the legs slightly bent, you push the platform using only the balls of your feet, which effectively isolates the calves without involving the quadriceps or glutes. The machine secures the load's path, letting you go heavy and focus entirely on range of motion and contraction, without the balance concerns of a bodyweight or barbell standing calf raise. It's a great choice for finishing a leg session with high calf volume in a stable, secure position.

lightbulbExecution tips

  • lightbulbAdjust the seat so the legs are slightly bent at the start
  • lightbulbPush only through the balls of your feet, fully flexing the ankles
  • lightbulbPause briefly at the bottom and top of each rep
  • lightbulbKeep the knees in a fixed position, since only the ankles should move

warningCommon mistakes

  • warningBending the knees more mid-set to cheat the movement
  • warningNot descending low enough, cutting the useful range short
  • warningRushing through reps without pausing at the top
  • warningLetting the heels lift off the platform in an uncontrolled way

helpFrequently asked questions

Does the calf press replace the standing calf raise?expand_more

It's complementary; the seated or lying position on the press slightly shifts the muscle emphasis compared to standing.

Can I load very heavy on this exercise?expand_more

Yes, the guided path allows it safely, but always prioritize full range of motion over maximum load.
