Rope Overhead Extension
About Rope Overhead Extension
The rope overhead triceps extension is done with your back to the pulley, the rope held behind the neck, torso leaning slightly forward. The constant tension of the cable and the spreading of the rope at the end of the movement powerfully stretch the long head of the triceps: the exercise thus combines stretch and continuous tension, two key hypertrophy factors. Extend the arms up and forward without moving the elbows, then return under control. Ideal for volume and pump work, alongside a heavy movement such as the close-grip bench press.
check_circleBenefits
- check_circleConstant cable tension throughout the entire range
- check_circleMaximal long-head stretch thanks to the overhead position
- check_circleThe rope lets you spread the hands to peak the contraction
lightbulbExecution tips
- lightbulbStep forward to create a slight downward angle
- lightbulbKeep the elbows high and close to your head
- lightbulbSpread the rope ends apart at full extension
- lightbulbLean the torso slightly forward to stabilize the position
warningCommon mistakes
- warningLetting the elbows drop and flare outward
- warningUsing the back to push instead of the triceps
- warningPicking a load that pulls you backward off balance
- warningRushing the stretch phase and cutting the range short
helpFrequently asked questions
Why choose the rope over a bar for overhead extensions?expand_more
The rope lets you spread your hands at the end of the movement, which increases the intensity of the triceps contraction.
Does this exercise target a specific triceps head?expand_more
The overhead arm position places the long head under stretch, so it is emphasized more than in pushdown variations.
Should I lean the torso forward?expand_more
Yes, slightly: leaning the torso aligns the cable with the arm and increases the long-head stretch at the bottom. Stay braced so you do not arch the lower back.
