Instructions

  1. 1Start out by strapping the bands around the base of the decline bench. Place the handles towards the inside of the decline bench so that when lying down, you can reach for both of them.
  2. 2Position your legs through the decline machine until they are secured. Now reach for the exercise bands with both hands. Use a pronated (palms forward) grip to grasp the handles. Position them near your collar bone and rotate your wrist to a neutral grip (palms facing the torso). Note: Your arms should remain stationary throughout the exercise. This is the starting position.
  3. 3Move your torso upward until your upper body is perpendicular to the floor while exhaling. Hold the contraction for a second and lower your upper body back down to the starting position while inhaling.
  4. 4Repeat for the recommended amount of repetitions.

About Weighted Sit-Ups - With Bands

This sit-up variation uses resistance bands anchored to the base of a decline bench to create increasing resistance throughout the ascent, unlike a free weight whose resistance stays constant. With your legs secured in the decline bench and the handles held near your collarbone, you sit up to vertical while exhaling, keeping your arms still throughout so the trunk alone works against the band resistance. This growing tension makes the top of the movement especially demanding, which nicely complements exercises where the difficulty is mostly concentrated at the bottom. It's a good way to vary the stimulus on the abs without switching to a completely different exercise.

check_circleBenefits

  • check_circleCreates progressive resistance throughout the movement
  • check_circleEspecially intensifies the top of the sit-up
  • check_circleThe decline bench secures leg positioning
  • check_circleA good variation to change up ab stimulus

lightbulbExecution tips

  • lightbulbKeep the arms still, only the trunk should move
  • lightbulbSit up to fully vertical to make use of peak tension
  • lightbulbControl the descent by resisting the band pull
  • lightbulbChoose bands suited to your current strength level

warningCommon mistakes

  • warningPulling with the arms instead of flexing the trunk
  • warningNot sitting all the way up, losing peak tension
  • warningChoosing bands too strong and breaking down technique
  • warningDropping back down too fast without control

helpFrequently asked questions

Why use bands instead of a regular weight?expand_more

Bands provide increasing resistance that makes the top of the movement harder, whereas a free weight stays constant.

What band tension should I choose?expand_more

Start with a light to medium band; you should be able to complete the full sit-up while keeping clean technique.
